Don’t build a CMS for content, alone

Having to publish lots of content isn’t enough to make me want to build a custom CMS. There’s just too many good publishing systems already out there – ExpressionEngine (our fav), Movable Type, Wordpress, Drupal, the list goes on.

If all you need is an easier way to update and add content to your site, you’d be a fool to pay an agency thousands of dollars to build something that’s already available for a few hundred bucks or even free in the case of open source solutions.

On the other hand, most lightweight publishing tools are usually not equally adept at managing broader needs beyond content. e.g. marketing campaigns, customers, visitors, partners, etc. Thus, you may find they don’t really mesh well with your core “marketing” demands. This is when you might consider a custom project or, better, just looking for a higher-end CMS.
